I chose to study at the National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA) for several important reasons. First, the university provides guaranteed dormitory housing, which relieved a lot of pressure when planning my move. The campus is compact and easy to navigate, making daily life and classes convenient. In addition, the location is excellent, surrounded by accessible transportation such as trains, high-speed rail, and the MRT, plus a night market nearby for everyday needs.
NTUA also offers great academic flexibility—students in different art-related departments are free to take courses across disciplines, which really broadens creative learning. Overall, the coursework is flexible and relaxed, allowing students to focus on creativity and personal growth.
My decision to enroll in the visual communication design program was strongly influenced by its flexibility and openness. In the Department of Visual Communication Design at NTUA, both major and elective courses have fewer restrictions compared to other departments, and students are encouraged to take classes across different disciplines.
This structure really suits someone like me, who has broad interests and enjoys exploring diverse fields of design. Since design is a vast world, I appreciate the freedom to experiment with different areas and discover what resonates with me the most. This multidisciplinary approach is exactly what makes the program truly appealing to me.
My advice to international students considering studying in Taiwan is to prepare well before you arrive—especially by planning your travels and understanding the local environment. Once you’re here, make good use of the resources offered on campus as well as opportunities outside the university, because both can really support your academic and personal growth.
And most importantly, invest time in learning Mandarin. It will make daily life much easier. It’ll also help you build deeper connections with people and open to more opportunities during your studies.
