Great Academic Prospect in a Supportive Environment 

One of the main reasons I chose to study at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) was the opportunity to pursue my master’s in international human resource development through the TaiwanICDF Scholarship. Receiving this scholarship represented not only financial support, but also an important vote of confidence in my academic and professional potential. Knowing that NTNU collaborates with Taiwan’s ICDF (International Cooperation and Development Fund) to support international students reassured me that I would have a high-quality academic environment and strong institutional guidance throughout my studies.

Another decisive factor was NTNU’s strong academic reputation, especially in the fields of education, training, and human development. Before applying, I researched universities across Asia, and NTNU consistently stood out for the quality of its programs, its curriculum design, and its commitment to global competencies. The IHRD program in particular aligned perfectly with my career goals, especially its focus on talent development, organizational behavior, and cross-cultural communication.

Taiwan itself played an important role in my decision. The country is known for its safety, its welcoming culture, and its strong emphasis on education and innovation. Studying here has allowed me to expand both my academic knowledge and my understanding of Asian culture, while also experiencing a supportive and friendly community. For all these reasons, NTNU quickly became my first choice, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be here.

Shaping a Strategic HR Career

My decision to enroll in the International Human Resource Development (IHRD) program at NTNU was shaped by both academic and personal motivations. Coming from a background in languages and education, and having experience working in the oil and gas industry, I wanted a program that would help me transition into a more strategic and global role within the field of human resources. The IHRD program stood out because it offered the perfect combination of theory, practice, and international perspective.

One of the strongest influences on my decision was the reputation of the professors in this program. Many of them have extensive academic and industry experience, and their research covers essential areas such as organizational behavior, leadership, employee well-being, and training and development. Knowing that I would be learning from scholars who actively contribute to the field made me confident that the program would push me to grow both academically and professionally.

Keys to Thriving in Taiwan

My biggest piece of advice for international students considering Taiwan is to come with an open mind and a willingness to embrace a culture that is both welcoming and wonderfully unique. Taiwan is one of the safest places in the world, and the people here are incredibly kind and helpful, even when language becomes a challenge. But you will be supported by the community and by your university.

At the beginning, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Everything is new: the food, the climate, the transportation system, and the academic environment. My advice is to give yourself time to adjust and to be patient with the process. Taiwan offers a very comfortable lifestyle, but it takes a couple of weeks to understand how everything works. Explore the surroundings at your own pace, try local dishes, learn basic Mandarin phrases, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Academically, Taiwanese universities are very supportive of international students. Professors are approachable, classmates are friendly, and campuses often have a wide range of resources. Take advantage of these opportunities early on. They make a big difference in your academic journey and your well-being.

Another important tip is to manage your budget wisely. Taiwan is affordable compared to many countries, but costs can add up, especially when balancing daily meals, transportation, and personal expenses.
