Taiwan’s natural beauty and safety, combined with its affordable world-class healthcare, high-quality education, efficient transportation, and rich cultural diversity, make it an ideal destination for students.
Educational Choice and Experience in Taiwan
My decision to study in Taiwan was primarily influenced by the country’s reputation for high-quality education. The accessibility of food from night markets and convenience stores, even late at night, along with Taiwan’s low crime rates, greatly appealed to me as a student who often works late in the laboratory. National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) became my choice because of its specialization in entomology, aligning with my research interests in preventing the establishment of quarantine pests in new regions. The opportunity to work alongside friendly Taiwanese lab mates has been a highlight of my studies.
Taiwan’s Attractions and Lifestyle
Taiwan’s beauty and safety, coupled with its affordable world-class healthcare, excellent education, reliable transportation, and diverse culture, make it an ideal place for students. My favorite place in Taiwan is Yehliu Geological Park in New Taipei City, known for its unique marine erosion formations, including the iconic Queen’s Head Rock. The student-friendly environment, equal rights for women and men, and the variety of delicious foods and teas have greatly enhanced my experience.
Academic Achievements and Challenges
The greatest learning achievement during my time in Taiwan has been acquiring advanced molecular skills in my laboratory, enhancing my theoretical knowledge through workshops, and improving communication skills at conferences. Writing a manuscript based on my research has been particularly rewarding. However, overcoming the language barrier and homesickness were significant challenges. Utilizing translation apps and regular video calls with my family have been effective in mitigating these issues.
Social Life and Career Prospects
Outside of my academic pursuits, socializing with friends over meals, shopping, visiting tourist attractions, and swimming are some of the ways I spend my time. I often share with my family and friends back home that pursuing my doctorate in Taiwan was a wise decision, highlighting the country’s healthcare, low living costs, scholarship opportunities, diverse cuisine, low crime rate, and career opportunities after graduation. The international connections I’ve made through conferences and workshops in Taiwan are expected to open up more career prospects post-graduation.
Future Plans and Comparative Analysis
After completing my studies, I plan to support myself and my family by working as a Post-doctoral researcher in Taiwan. The familiarity with the laboratory environment at NCHU makes it an attractive option for continuing my career. In comparison to my home country, Taiwanese education combines theoretical and practical approaches, utilizing modern teaching equipment and facilities. This contrasts with the predominantly theoretical education in my country, affirming the advanced nature of Taiwanese education.
