Philippines
I chose to study in Taiwan for its generous scholarships and abundant opportunities for international students. Additionally, its healthcare system—ranked among the best in the world—further reflects the country’s commitment to quality of life and well-being.
Reasons for Choosing Taiwan for Study
Taiwan was my choice for study because of its scholarships and opportunities for foreign students in various master’s and PhD programs. The country’s healthcare system is ranked among the best in the world, making it one of the safest countries to live in. Additionally, the convenience of travel, with tourist spots easily accessible by bus or train, and the preservation of natural resources offering hiking trails, make Taiwan an ideal place for both study and enjoyment of life.
Educational Experience in Taiwan
My choice of university was influenced by their offering of an international health program and financial assistance for international students like myself. Public health is my passion, and I’ve been eager to learn about different programs and strategies to enhance community health, particularly in my home country, the Philippines. The courses in public health and epidemiology have been enriching, with friendly classmates and kind professors enhancing the learning experience.
Academic Achievements and Challenges
One of my greatest achievements in Taiwan has been passing three written examinations in my program, qualifying me to become a PhD candidate. This accomplishment was made possible with the support of professors, classmates, and my faith. Adjusting to life in Taiwan, particularly the academic requirements, was challenging at first. However, with the support of family and friends, I adapted to life as an international student and am now thoroughly enjoying my experience here.
Life Beyond Academics
When not studying, I spend time exploring Taiwan with friends. We engage in various activities like hiking, swimming, eating, and playing different sports. These experiences have helped me learn about Taiwanese culture, try different foods, and practice Mandarin.
Sharing Experiences with Family and Friends
I often share my experiences in Taiwan with my family and friends back home, emphasizing the safety and discipline prevalent in the country. I encourage them to visit Taiwan and explore its beauty. I also advocate for students interested in studying abroad to consider Taiwan due to its numerous opportunities for both local and foreign students.
Future Career and Plans
The knowledge I’ve acquired in public health, healthcare systems, and epidemiology in Taiwan will significantly contribute to my future career. I plan to implement effective community health programs in my country upon my return. It is my passion to help many people especially the unprivileged individuals. I want to educate and inspire young people, I want to do many community programs, and I want to change the health care system in my country so no one anymore will die without even seeing a doctor! Although I would love to stay in Taiwan, I feel a duty to serve my home country. I intend to complete my PhD and possibly a post-doc in Taiwan before returning to apply my skills and experiences in the Philippines.
Comparison with Home Country Education
Studying in Taiwan differs significantly from my home country. The professors here are supportive, the universities provide financial assistance to foreign students, and the students are competitively spirited in a positive way. The facilities are well-maintained, and overall, life as an international student in Taiwan is less stressful compared to my home country.
