Egypt
I was drawn to Taiwan for its rare balance of complete freedom and exceptional safety—an uncommon yet remarkable combination among Asian countries.
Academic Experience and Program
I am pursuing my second year of PhD studies in the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan University (NTU). My research focus is in carbohydrate chemistry, and I am working in a laboratory at the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Academia Sinica (IBC, AS). I am enrolled in the Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics (CBMB) program, supported by a Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP) scholarship, recognized as one of Taiwan’s most distinguished drug discovery projects. My academic journey includes studying chemical biology, organic chemistry, herbal medicines, and pharmaceutical chemistry. I find pharmaceutical chemistry particularly engaging due to its relevance to my research and the expertise of the lecturers, including renowned scientists from UC Davis. These courses offer deep scientific discussions and valuable feedback, significantly enhancing my academic performance.
Motivation for Studying in Taiwan
I chose Taiwan for its unique combination of absolute freedom and high safety standards, a distinctive feature among Asian countries. The Taiwanese government’s efforts to globally represent the country as a well-developed nation, while providing a safe haven for minorities, greatly influenced my decision. Additionally, Taiwan’s advanced research capabilities in life sciences, with its integrated research facilities and collaborations with top universities, aligned perfectly with my academic goals.
Comparison with Home Country
Taiwan’s education quality, evidenced by the presence of around ten universities in the top 500 globally, is notably higher than in Egypt. The facilities and resources provided by Taiwanese universities, including materials, classes, laboratories, and libraries, are comprehensive. They effectively aid in understanding and studying subjects. I also appreciate the focus on practical experience and independent research, which was lacking in my education in Egypt. Moreover, the attention to students’ psychological well-being and the generous research funding in Taiwan are commendable.
Challenges and Adaptation
The most significant challenge for me was the language barrier, as Chinese is vastly different from Arabic and English. Adapting to Taiwan’s climate, especially the cold and rainy winters, was also difficult. However, I have come to enjoy the local culture and cuisine, including the vegan options available in various restaurants.
Future Plans and Career Prospects
Post-PhD, I aim to work in the pharmaceutical industry, preferably in Taiwan. The country’s high quality of life and promising career opportunities in line with its globalization policy make it an ideal location for me. The education and professional networks I am building at NTU and Academia Sinica will, I believe, enhance my career prospects, both locally and internationally.
Achievements and Progress
While I don’t consider having achieved anything significant yet, being selected for a photoshoot for NTU’s official admission website and collaborating with NTU’s Office of International Affairs were proud moments. My research is progressing well within the planned timeframe, and I have achieved good grades in most of my courses, thanks to the support of my professors and lab mates.
Advice for Prospective Students
To future students considering Taiwan for their studies, I would say: enjoy your study time and the company of the friendly locals. Taiwan’s safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, its efficient education system, affordable and high-quality healthcare, and the pristine environment are aspects that make studying here a unique and rewarding experience. The country’s blend of Western openness and Eastern heritage is also something to be appreciated.
