United States of America
Taiwan’s academic environment features highly experienced professors who share insights that go far beyond what’s found in textbooks.
My name is Ethan Ng, and I am a sophomore student at National Taiwan University in the Civil Engineering Department. I am from the United States but grew up in Malaysia for most of my childhood. I am fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. I’ve been studying in Taiwan for about two years and am really enjoying my stay.
Academic Journey and Program
I chose to study in Taiwan due to my fondness for Taiwanese culture, developed during my education at the Chinese Taipei School Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. My family’s trip to Taiwan was one of our most memorable, where I gained insight into Taiwanese life, known for its outstanding education, healthcare system, delicious food, and beautiful landscapes. I am currently enrolled in the bachelor’s program in civil engineering at National Taiwan University, studying fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, structural theory, and material engineering. These courses represent fundamental branches of civil engineering, challenging my critical thinking and offering a mix of theory and hands-on learning experiences.
Comparing Educational Environments
Compared to my home country, Taiwan’s educational environment offers more experienced professors who provide information beyond textbooks. The campus and facilities at National Taiwan University are significantly larger and more up-to-date than my previous college in Malaysia. The libraries are resourceful, though most materials are in Chinese. Taiwan also provides a convenient public transportation system and a diverse social environment with many foreign students.
Challenges and Personal Growth
Writing my personal statement was the greatest challenge in applying to universities in Taiwan. It was a reflective process that helped me understand what makes me unique. Refining the statement and staying true to myself helped me overcome this challenge.
Future Plans
After completing my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in Taiwan or the United States, or consider an internship program. I am open to staying in Taiwan if opportunities arise, as I like the environment here. However, being spontaneous, I am open to wherever life takes me.
Career Prospects and Achievements
Studying in Taiwan will benefit my future career by providing international connections and job opportunities. The education here trains me to be diligent and develops the right work attitude. My most important achievement in Taiwan is becoming more fluent in Mandarin. Living far from home has taught me growth and independence, preparing me for future challenges.
Advice to Prospective International Students
To future students coming to Taiwan, I recommend mingling with locals to learn about Taiwan’s culture and improve your Mandarin. Stepping out of your comfort zone and exploring new opportunities enriches the learning experience. Utilize Taiwan’s public transportation to explore the island, which, despite its size, has a lot to offer.
