St. Lucia
Taiwan’s culture has really opened my mind and expanded the way I see the world.
I am a freshman at Tunghai University, pursuing a degree in International Business. My passions include e-commerce, entrepreneurship, language, cultural exchange, and meeting new people.
My choice to study in Taiwan was influenced by several factors. Saint Lucia has favorable diplomatic ties with Taiwan, offering scholarships to students each year. I was drawn to this educational opportunity and the chance to be part of a learned community. As an aspiring business professional with a love for languages, the prospect of learning Mandarin, a key language in international business, was particularly appealing. Additionally, Taiwan’s reputation for its modern, technologically advanced economy and rich, multicultural society aligns perfectly with my business studies.
Academic Program and Enjoyment
I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international business, covering subjects like marketing management, accounting, economics, commercial law, and programming design. These interdisciplinary courses provide in-depth insight into international business operations. The most enjoyable aspect of my studies is the opportunity to interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, languages, and global perspectives, which serves as a source of inspiration.
Educational Comparison: Saint Lucia and Taiwan
Compared to Saint Lucia’s more traditional educational approach, Taiwan uses a modern-day approach with online course material distribution. The professors in Taiwan are competent, friendly, and professional, often recording lectures for later review. Taiwanese universities offer additional learning support through office hours and teacher assistant classes, which is less common in Saint Lucia. Facilities in Taiwan, such as libraries and computer rooms, are up-to-date, enhancing the learning experience.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
The biggest challenge in applying to study in Taiwan was the lack of detailed information on the university’s website about my chosen course. I overcame this by communicating with the school’s administration, who provided additional resources to help me make my decision.
Career Benefits from Studying in Taiwan
My biggest achievement so far has been ranking in the top 15 students in my class during my first semester. I have broadened my knowledge in economics and business management, expanded my network, and significantly improved my Mandarin proficiency.
Studying in Taiwan will be instrumental in shaping my future as an entrepreneur. It will enable me to create lasting relationships, learn new business theories and strategies, and conduct business with the Asian market. Learning Mandarin will facilitate communication with local suppliers, enhancing my business prospects.
After completing my undergraduate studies, I intend to stay in Taiwan to pursue a Master’s degree in Global Business Management while managing my business part-time. I plan to teach English part-time as a way to give back to Taiwan. Eventually, I aim to return to Saint Lucia as a professional and contribute to sustainable development by opening businesses locally.
Advice for Prospective Students
I highly recommend studying in Taiwan. Not only will you receive quality education, but you’ll also find the people here, both locals and foreigners, to be friendly and welcoming. Taiwan’s culture has made me more open-minded and broadened my perspective of the world.
